1. I'm a feeder...
...in a good way :) I love the feeling of pride and happiness when I see people enjoying food that I have cooked and served.
2. Eating brings people together
Food creates a sense of community, regardless how big or how small.
3. It's how I give and share love
Oscar always says “I know your secret ingredient when you cook mummy, it's love.” I strongly believe that when you cook from the heart it always tastes so much better than when you throw something together that you don’t really care about.
4. It creates family time
Meal times are sacred in our house. And as Oscar is getting older, we ensure that at weekends we at least eat our evening meal together as a family, with no technology or interruptions. We also always start our meal by telling each other what we are grateful for that day. It has become a family tradition and it’s important to start creating these things with our own children. Oscar will now sit down and be the first to say “mummy what are you grateful for today?”
5. It's creative
Food is like art except you get to eat it when you have finished it! It's very fulfilling seeing a creation, that you have made from scratch, come together on a plate.
6. I know what I’m eating
If I have cooked the dish then I know what’s in it and where the ingredients come from - no hidden sugar, salt or nasty additives. You will be shocked at how much is hidden in ready-made food and takeaways!!
7. Cooking is my meditation
It’s relaxing and helps me unwind. Once you get into the flow, cooking becomes a very meditative experience; as long as you're organized and well prepared with all your ingredients before you start cooking, and clear up as you go, there is no stress. It clears your mind as you quickly only become focused and absorbed in the one thing you're doing and that is so rare nowadays.
8. Because it's what we've been doing for generations!
In a world filled with technology, it's refreshing to do something at the end of the day (or a few times during the day) that’s using all our senses; touch, smell, taste, sight, and sound. Cooking incorporates all of these and that feels grounding somehow.
9. It's fun
Food is and should be, playful and it's fun to be experimental! Do not take it too seriously but rather let the fear of the unknown fall away as you add and remove ingredients, try new things and see what works - use and trust your instincts.
10. Because I love eating
Need I say more? :)
If would like to share your own reasons, we would love to hear them in the comments below. Happy cooking!
